Woman Wrongly Accused of Using Fake Bill Settles
The South Carolina woman that was wrongly accused by Target of using a fake one hundred dollar bill has settled in a lawsuit with the retailer. An employee sent her picture to seventy-five different businesses claiming that Rita Cantrell tried to use counterfeit money. Members of the Secret Service determined that the bill used by Cantrell in 2006 was not a fake. Cantrell sued Target and was awarded just over three million dollars by a jury a year ago, largely for the humiliation she had to suffer through.
The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, and Cantrell’s attorney, Billy Wilkins, declined to provide details due to court orders. Wilkins agreed, however, that the award sends a clear message to Target and other retailers “not to let this sort of thing happen.”
