Woman Pleads Guilty in Smart Kidnapping
One of the two people involved in the 2002 kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart has pleaded guilty. Wanda Eileen Barzee pleaded guilty in a deal with federal prosecutors to charges of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor in U.S. District Court on Tuesday. Barzee, age sixty-four, faces a potential life sentence for the kidnapping charge, and up to fifteen years in prison for the other. Whether she will get a reduced sentence for her plea is not certain.
Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped at age fourteen, when she was taken from her home in Salt Lake City at knifepoint. Nine months later, in March 2003, her kidnappers were arrested when they were spotted walking a suburban street with Smart.
