Wisconsin Parents to be Sentenced in Prayer Death Case
A couple in Wisconsin was convicted of reckless homicide because they decided to pray instead of seeking medical attention for their dying eleven-year-old daughter, and will be sentenced. Dale and Leilani Neumann could potentially face up to twenty-five years in prison when sentenced on Tuesday. They were convicted at separate trials, both of which were for charges of second-degree reckless homicide in the involvement of Madeline Neumann’s death. Their daughter died in March of 2003 from undiagnosed diabetes.
Prosecutors stated that the obvious choice should have been to take their daughter to the hospital because she couldn’t walk, talk, eat, or drink. Madeline died on the floor of the family’s rural Wisconsin home, surrounded by praying people. Nobody called an ambulance until she had stopped breathing. The Neumanns argued that they believe all healing comes from God – their attorneys have stated that their convictions will be appealed.
