Victims of Derailment Settle for $30M
A Southern California rail authority will pay roughly thirty million dollars to settle the majority of the lawsuits filed after a commuter train derailment four years ago. Jerome Ringler, the lead attorney representing the victims of the crash, said on Wednesday that Metrolink had agreed to settle almost ninety percent of the injury and wrongful death cases. Both sides will continue to negotiate the remainder of the settlements, Ringler said.
Metrolink declined to comment on the settlements. The derailment occured on January 26th in the Glendale area. It was triggered by a man that had left a gasoline-soaked Jeep Cherokee on the railroad tracks. A Metrolink train struck the SUV, then derailed and struck an oncoming train. Eleven people were killed and about one hundred eighty injured.
