Utah Agrees to $24 million Dollar Settlement with Makers of Zyprexa

Eli Lilli and Company, who make and manufacture the anti-psychotic drug Zyprexa, reached a 24 million dollar settlement agree with the state of Utah after claims that they engaged in off label marketing.

Zyprexa, which treats individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorders,  was found to be used for other conditions it was not marketed for including dementia, Alzheimer’s, agitation and depression.   4 year Investigation revealed that1,769 Medicaid patients over the age of 65 were taking the drug for purposes other than what the FDA approved it for.

Utah was one of 13 states that filed a separate lawsuit against Lilly and did not take part in a $62 million settlement announced a year ago that involved more than 30 states, Lilly spokeswoman Marni Lemons said.

Lemons said Lilly admits no wrongdoing in connection with the Utah settlement.

In the past two months, South Carolina agreed to a $45 million settlement with Lilly and Connecticut agreed to a $25 million settlement over Zyprexa marketing.
