Eighteen-year-old Brandon Piekarsky and 19-year-old Derrick Donchak will be arraigned Tuesday in Wilkes-Barre on charges stemming from the July 2008 beating death of 25-year-old Luis Ramirez.

A jury had previously acquitted Piekarsky and Donchak of the most serious state charges in the case, angering Hispanic leaders and civil-rights groups. The decision prompted Gov. Ed Rendell to ask the Justice Department to pursue civil-rights charges against the teens. Three Shenandoah police officers were charged separately last week with obstructing the investigation into Ramirez’s death.

On Nov 8, 2008  he was stabbed in the chest by Pacheco and six others who went looking for a Latino victim. Pacheco is not the only member of the gang to arrange a deal in return for his testimony.  Last month another defendant in the assault pleaded guilty to conspiracy and hate crimes as well.

The case received a national spotlight due to the nature of the crime and the motivation behind it.  The attention prompted the U.S. Justice department to investigate instances of rate crimes and police response to them with the goal of spreading awareness on the issue.

Authorities have said that at least five Southern California children were attacked after a group on Facebook announced a “Kick a Ginger Day” event, inspired by an episode of the “South Park” television show. Nobody was seriously hurt and no arrests were made, police said.

A twelve-year-old boy reported being kicked and hit by classmates, and a sixth-grade girl said she was kicked in the legs from behind. The episode of the television show was meant to satirize racial prejudice.

Jack Rhodes, a resident of Queens, was sentenced on Wednesday after being convicted of victimizing three women. One of the women is Rose Morat, who is now 103. Authorities said that the forty-seven-year-old Rhodes targeted most of the women because of their age, which classifies his actions as hate crimes.

A surveillance camera recorded the 2007 attack, showing Morat leaving her apartment using a walker before being attacked. Morat suffered a cheekbone fracture and multiple bruises. Her attacker got thirty-three dollars.

Jose Pacheco agreed on Wednesday to testify against the other defendants in the case. Dry-cleaning worker Marcelo Lucero was stabbed to death in November of last year.

Authorities say that seven teenagers went looking for a Latino victim. Another defendant pleaded guilty to conspiracy and hate crime charges last month, and also agreed to testify.

Judge Edward Lodge sentenced twenty-three-year-old Michael Bullard to at least four years in prison, twenty-four-year-old Richard Armstrong to at least three, and twenty-three-year-old James Whitewater to a year and a half.

Bullard and Armstrong were convicted in July. Whitewater pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate rights before the case went to trial. Prosecutors say the three plotted an attack against Raylen Smith, who was twenty-four at the time, after seeing him in the aisle of a Wal-Mart. The three beat him until he blacked out.

Jack Price was leaving a corner deli near his home when he was assaulted by two men in what appears to be a crime stemming from anti-gay sentiment. He currently remains in a medically induced coma, and is in serious but stable condition.

Police spokespeople reported that the two suspects taunted Price before and during the attack, yelling anti-gay slurs while he was in the store early Friday. They attacked him once he came outside, near the College Point neighborhood in Queens. One suspect, twenty-six-year-old Daniel Aleman, was arrested on Sunday and charged with aggravated assault as a hate crime. The second suspect is still being sought.

The  beating occurred when Lockner, accompanied by 17-year-old Zachary Watson   and 16-year-old Emmanuel Miller saw 76-year-old James Privott fishing near a waterfront park in south Baltimore.  Lockner, who is nicknamed “Hitler” and sports a tattoo of his namesake, and the two teens, attacked the man without provocation.

Calvin Lockner, a legal adult, will be tried as an adult while the lawyers for the 16 and 17 year old defendants are seeking to have the case moved to juvenile court.  Trial dates for all three  is set for December 11.
