A legislative oversight committee appeared in an Alabama court on Thursday to halt a thirteen million dollar no-bid computer contract. The contract was between Governor Bob Riley’s administration and a company with no listed business number and no web site. The Legislature’s Contract Review Committee and its Chairman, Rep. Alvin Homles D-Ala., filed the suit in Montgomery County Circuit Court against the governor and the company, Paragon Source LLC.

Jeff Emerson, the communications director for the Republican governor, said that the lawsuit constituted political maneuvering by the Democrats on the Contract Review Committee. “The evidence produced to the committee supports a conclusion that the … contracts were entered into in violation of Alabama’s Competitive Bid Law and are void as a matter of law,” the lawsuit said.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is facing his lowest-ever approval rating – in fact, compared with the six governors that preceded him, his approval rating ranks just above Gray Davis just before he was recalled from office. Schwarzenegger’s approval rating currently stands at twenty-seven percent, with sixty-five percent of voters disapproving of his current performance. His approval rating was at its highest in 2004, during his first full year in office, and has been slipping since December 2007 when his approval stood at about sixty percent.

These results were based on a telephone survey of over one thousand voters, conducted between September 18th to October 5th. The survey reports having a margin of error of about three percent.

Following lawmakers’ desires to obtain a probe into South California governor Mark Sanford’s travel expenses, Sanford explains that he will use any and all necessary legal action to prevent the probe from going public.

The preliminary state Ethics Commission report in question, containing an in-depth look at Gov. Sanford’s travel expenses, may answer questions regarding alleged use of the government-funded air travel to see a woman with whom was having an affair. The affair allegedly lasted for one year, leading many to question the South California governor’s integrity when the relationship was finally made public.

Sanford admits to the extramarital affair and has apologized, but he denies traveling illicitly. Even still, speculation alone has caused many to call for Sanford resignation. State Republication Party leaders met on Thursday, September 10, 2009, to discuss the dilemma. In July, a Republican Party executive committee censured Sanford for the affair. Further action may be taken against Sanford by the Party if public opinion continues to favor resignation or if released reports do indeed confirm illicit use of government-funded air travel.
