Sting Snags 3 U.S. Sex Tourists — Charges to Come

An undercover sting called Operation Twisted Traveler managed to reel in 3U.S. natives who were involved in sex acts with young kids while abroad. The men, namely Ronald Boyajian, Erik Peeters and Jack Sporich had visited Cambodia to indulge in illegal sexual behavior with minors.  They are expected to arrive in Los Angeles Monday evening after being arrested in February by Cambodian police.

The men are but the tip of the iceberg of Americans who travel abroad to have sex with children. Operation Twisted Traveler was an answer to this billion dollar phenomenon and was enacted to capture criminals who felt they could victimize children just because they traipse overseas.  As John Morton, the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement put it, “Boarding a plane to a foreign land is no protection.”

Many perpetrators like the above three sex offenders, drug, beat and rape their victims.  Others lure them with American dollars or promises of reward.  The Protect Act, which became law in 2003, was a measure enacted to crack down on this kind of abuse and make it easier to try criminals once they return to the United States.

The men could get 30 years for each alleged victim.
