Same-Sex Marriage Bill in DC Gains Speed
A bill that would permit same-sex couple to be legally married was introduced in the nation’s capitol, which even opponents agreed is beginning to look unstoppable. The bill is virtually guaranteed to pass the D.C. city council, though Congress will get an opportunity to review the legislati0n before it can take effect.
The city began recognizes same-sex marriages performed elsewhere in July. Representative Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican, said he would attempt to defeat the bill. A spokesperson for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said that the matter was for D.C. to decide. The measure was introduced by D.C. Councilman David Catania at a council meeting. The bill states that religious leaders and institutions are not required to perform marriages or rent their space to same-sex ceremonies unless they already allow the public to rent and use them.
