Richmond, CA. Shocked by Rape Case

The gang rape and assault of a fifteen-year-old girl on school grounds after her homecoming dance was reportedly watched by up to twenty people. Nobody attempted to stop the attack or even notify authorities. The attack rattled the bay-area city of about one hundred twenty thousand people. One police officer said it was one of the most hideous crimes he’d ever seen. Some students have already left the school district in response.

“It’s not safe there at all,” said 16-year-old Jennie Steinberg, whose mother let her transfer out of the district Tuesday. “I’m not going back.” The victim was a sophomore, and had been drinking outside in a courtyard with a group of students when she was attacked, authorities said.
