Program Aiding Truckers Attracts Drug Runners
A program offering trusted trucking companies quick passage across American borders has begun to attract drug dealers, due to the reduced chances of inspection. Most of the trucks enrolled in the program are held at the border for barely twenty seconds, and nine out of ten do so without their cargo being inspected.
In that tenth of trucks that are inspected, however, authorities frequently find loads of contraband. Authorities seized almost thirteen tons of marijuana in a period of three weeks last spring. Experts are now questioning if the program makes sense, since most drug traffickers are willing to take the risk to smuggle drugs into the United States.
