Photographer Pleads Not Guilty to Bear-Baiting
A photographer from Alaska recently pled not guilty to charges of bear-baiting without a permit. Jim Oltersdorf, a wildlife photographer, has been accused of hanging bait over a scale in order to draw bears so he could weigh them in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. He was doing work for the “MonsterQuest” History Channel show.
Oltersdorf’s lawyer, Brent Cole, argued that the bear-baiting charge was not fair because he had not been hunting. Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Bruce Woods responded that bear-baiting does not require one to be hunting. According to Woods, it is illegal to bait brown bears within the refuge under any circumstances, and baiting black bears requires a permit.
