Pelosi says Health Bill to Address Antitrust

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said that she’ll be including a measure that removes health insurers’ federal antitrust exemption in the upcoming sweeping health care legislation. Pelosi made her announcement on Thursday, which was a day after Senate Democratic leaders said they would take the same step with the Senate’s health care overhaul bill.

The effort to take away the health care industry’s exemption from federal antitrust laws is a sign of increasing frustration over health insurers’ continued opposition to the Democrats’ health care overhaul. Several stand-alone bills had been pending in both chambers, but incorporating them into the larger health care overhaul defines the Democrats’ drive to punish insurers.
