Over Half a Million Kids have bad Drug Reactions
A new study that appeared in October’s Pediatrics on Monday indicated that greater than half a million kids suffer from adverse reactions to common medicines. 5 % of that number require hospitalization.
Research indicated that children 5 years and under were the most commonly affected, developing rashes, hives stomachaches and diarrhea after being treated with prescription antibiotics and penicillin. The research was based on data collected from patient’s visits to the emergency room between the year of 1995 and 2005. The number of children entering the emergency room from bad drug reactions averaged 585, 922 during that ten year period.
Similar numbers of children, an estimated 540, 000, were also hospitalized for side effects due to medicine mix ups and accidental overdoses.
Pediatricians are advised to warn parents to watch their children closely when starting them on any type of prescription treatments to avoid possible litigation for personal injury. They should also caution that a first time regimen can signal allergic reactions that may need to be recognized in latter years.
Prevalent overdoses occurred with liquid medicines which can be administered in droppers, cups, milliliters and teaspoons. Parents may assume the doses are interchangeable when they are not. To guard against this, doctor’s advise parents to only administer medicine with the dosing instrument it came with. They should also ask thorough questions to ensure that they understand exactly how to administer medicine prescribed by a physician once they get home.
