OnStar Disables Stolen SUV During High-Speed Chase

A high-speed chase was cut short when a stolen SUV was disabled by an electronic signal from OnStar. The 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe was carjacked at gunpoint early Sunday – officers began pursuit, but shortly after making a right turn the gas pedal was disabled by OnStar and the car came to a slow stop. The thief, confused, got out of the vehicle and ran, but was chased down and arrested after climbing several fences and falling into a backyard swimming pool.

This was the first time since OnStar began offering the service in 2009 that the ability to disable cars electronically was used to stop a potentially disastrous chase. “He wouldn’t have pulled over if OnStar hadn’t have shut the vehicle down,” said Visalia Police Sgt. Steve Phillips. “Generally pursuits end in a collision.”
