New Law will Help Student Keep Health Coverage

In Concord N.H., a law inspired by one young woman’s fight to keep her health insurance will enable students to keep their coverage in the event of serious illness.  Michelle’s law, which is named after  Michelle Morse who died of colon cancer at the age of 22,  allows those going to college to continue to be covered by their parents health insurance should they leave school for medical reasons.

Morse  herself remained in school full time despite being seriously ill so she could obtain health coverage through her family’s medical plan, otherwise the insurance company would have stopped paying for her care.

The new law  allows students to take up to a year off from school  for health related reasons and remains on the family insurance plans.  The measure was sponsored by Representative Paul Hodes  who  joined Michelle’s mother, Ann Marie Morse, in her bid to change the current health insurance laws.

She called the  victory bittersweet and vowed to continue the fight for health care reform.
