Massachusetts Governor Credits Stimulus with 23,000 Jobs
Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts said on Wednesday that the federal stimulus package is directly responsible for creating or saving at least twenty-three thousand jobs in Massachusetts since February. State agencies received $4 billion from the national package of $787 billion, and have spent almost half of that. The expenses included about $1.3 billion for benefits like unemployment insurance and $500 million on state programs and infrastructure.
The 23,533 jobs represent those whose paychecks are funded by stimulus money, including six thousand interns who worked only for the summer. Patrick said that the extra money has greatly helped avoid deep employment cuts across the state. He reported that the groups who were most able to retain their jobs included teachers, firefighters, police officers, and construction workers.
