Maine Voters Reject Same-Sex Marriage
Voters in Maine have repealed a state law that would have allowed same-sex couples to marry, making this yet another blow in a series of defeats for the gay rights movement. The defeat came especially hard as Maine is situated in the corner of the country that most heavily supports gay rights. Gay marriage has been defeated in every state in which it has been put to a popular vote – Maine’s vote made this total thirty-one.
Eighty-seven percent of the voting precincts reported that those voting against gay marriage totaled fifty-three percent. “The institution of marriage has been preserved in Maine and across the nation,” declared Frank Schubert, chief organizer for the winning side.
