Lawyer says 9/11 Conspirator Deserves New Trial
A lawyer working for Zacarias Moussaoui recently told a court of federal appeals in Virginia that one of the conspirators of the Sept. 11th terror attacks is entitled to a new trial. Moussaoui is currently serving a life sentence after he pled guilty to assisting in the planning of the 2001 terrorism attacks. His lawyer, however, told a three-judge panel that the plea was unconstitutional on Friday. He argued that the trial lawyers had to undergo a national security background check, which had restricted Moussaoui’s right to choose his counsel.
Moussaoui claims that he was denied helpful evidence, though a federal prosecutor said he chose to plead guilty before evidence was provided. The fourth United States Court of Appeals originally heard Moussaoui’s appeal earlier this year, but a panel member retired before the case could be closed, thus requiring new arguments.
