Judge to Hear Arguments in Federal Auction Oil Drilling Case
A federal judge will be hearing arguments on Friday concerning the recent case of a college student who interrupted a federal auction for oil drilling leases in Utah. Tim DeChristopher’s defense attorney will be attempting to prove that his client was acting in the interest of the greater good – DeChristopher was trying to protect wild lands near Utah’s national parks from drilling, as well as call attention to climate change. This defense is commonly called the “lesser-of-two-evils,” referring to the defendent’s intentions to use a small crime to stop a greater one.
Prosecutors have asked the judge to block the “lesser-of-two-evils” defense for this case. The motion is scheduled to be argued before Judge Dee Benson in Salt Lake City, Friday morning. DeChristopher pleaded not guilty to several felony counts, including interfering with a government auction.
