Judge says Inmate can Refuse Blood Transfusion
A judge in Pennsylvania recently ruled that an inmate can legally refuse a blood transfusion, even if the procedure could save his life. Commonwealth Court Judge Keith B. Quigley said that inmate Anthony Lindsey’s wish must be protected under the first amendment, in a ruling made public on Wednesday.
Lindsey is currently suffering from a kidney ailment, and a doctor at the state prison near Laurel Highlands says that the thirty-seven-year-old inmate risks dying if he does not allow the transfusion. Lindsey has said he will not allow the transfusion because it violates his religious beliefs as a Jehovah’s Witness. He is currently serving a minimum of thirteen years for drug trafficking.
