Illegal Sex in Prisons a Nationwide Problem
The secretary of the Kansas Department of Corrections recently reported that they have established procedures to document and report cases of illegal sex in Kansas prisons, though it is a nationwide problem that has been going on for some time. Roger Werholtz, the Corrections Secretary, responded on Monday to a newspaper investigation that suggested several Kansas corrections officers had at some point traded contraband for sex with female inmates. An extensive black market economy was described in one prison by the Topeka Capital-Journal.
Secretary Werholtz says that sexual activity in the corrections system is illegal, and that if allegations can be substantiated then the case is moved to prosecutors. He also said that while many corrections officers and inmates may claim the problem is rampant, statistics indicate that it isn’t as concerning as it may seem.
