Housing Regulations Add Protection for Gays

Federal housing officials said on Wednesday that they are developing regulations to make sure that homosexuals aren’t denied access to federally subsidized housing based on sexual orientation. The Housing and Urban Development Department will also be commissioning a first-ever nationwide study, which will determine to what extent discrimination based on sexual orientation is occuring in housing sales and rentals.

Officials said that the Fair Housing Act does not specifically state that gays and lesbians are being protected. Instead, it seeks to ensure that gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people are treated the same as everyone else in terms of eligibility for housing.
