House Dems Divided Over Abortion in Health Care Debate

House Democrats have reached an impasse regarding whether the overhaul of the nation’s health care system would allow federal funding of abortion. Two dozen anti-abortion Democrats believe that it would – while this opposition will likely not stall the legislation, it does mean the Democratic party is divided just weeks before the bill hits floor action.

Lawmakers say they have compromised as far as they can to address anti-abortion concerns. As of now, people receiving government subsidies in order to buy health insurance under the new health care system will not be able to use that money to have an abortion. Negotiations to find a common ground have not been productive.
