Gay Rights Supporters Argue for Anti-Alias Bill

Two members of Congress, both of whom are openly gay, recently urged their colleagues to support a bill that would help protect homosexuals and transsexuals against workplace bias. Representatives Barney Frank of Massachusetts and Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, both Democrats, told a panel of the House on Wednesday that it is time to extend federal anti-discrimination laws to include sexual orientation. The House had passed a similar bill two years ago, but it was stalled when it reached the Senate. A vote is expected from the House later this year.

Frank reported that larger Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate will increase the bill’s likelihood of passing. Religious conservatives, unsurprisingly, opposed the legislation. They said that the bill was not necessary, and would lead to “an explosion in costly litigation.”
