Former Nuclear Lab Worker Accused of Theft

A federal grand jury recently indicted a former lab worker from Los Alamos National Laboratory on two charges after he was accused of attempting to steal radiation-tainted gold worth over two thousand dollars from the lab. Alex Maestas has been indicted on charges of receiving or stealing the gold, as well as stealing nuclear material. His arraignment will be held on October 22nd.

It is alleged that Maestas, who was working in the laboratory’s plutionium-processing facility at the time, attempted to carry out gold shavings in a plastic sandwich bag hidden in his fist. Officials from the lab say that the gold had been contaminated by small amounts of radioactive material. Authorities reported that there was no exposure to radiation.
