Florida Apartments Offer Homes for Sex Offenders
Miracle Park, a group of single-story yellow buildings around a small park, is well-known in Pahokee, Florida for being populated mostly with a single demographic: sex offenders. The development opened in January, and the pastor who runs it, Richard Witherow, recruited former inmates by handing out brochures in Florida prisons. Thirty-five sex offenders are now living in the complex, which sits roughly three miles in the Everglades outside of town.
Several residents of Pahokee have expressed complaints about having such a high number of ex-convicts, especially those whose past contains crimes of a sexual nature, living in a single place near their town. Since convicted sex offenders face such severe restrictions upon where they can live (nowhere near churches, schools, parks, or bus stops), a cluster in a rural area seemed to make sense.
