Federal Contractors Report 30,000 Jobs
Businesses that received federal grants under the terms of the economic stimulus package have reported more than thirty thousand jobs saved or created over the first few months of the program. The numbers were released on Thursday by a government watchdog group. They comprised the first data regarding the effect of the stimulus. The numbers only reflect jobs linked to federal contracts, including those in the fields of construction at military bases and within national parks.
The tally is part of a tremendous effort (in fact, the largest ever) to measure the success of a government program in real time. The economy is showing signs of recovering from the recession, although the creation of jobs is moving slowly. The White House says that things would have been far worse without the creation of the stimulus package.
