FDA Reveals Database to make Food Safety Reporting Faster
Soon to become mandatory, the Food and Drug Administration has set up a system wherein food manufacturers could report potentially contaminated products within a 24 hour period. The move comes after a stern rebuke from congress as well as a slew of product liability lawsuits when tainted foods like peanuts and spinach caused sickness and death across the US.
The ruling would also cover drugs and pharmaceuticals that may harm the general public.
The new regulations will help officials keep on top of, and report, health risks sooner. To facilitate the process, the FDA will utilize an electronic database where food growers and manufacturer can notify the government when they discover their products can cause sickness or death in animals or human beings.
The law to create the database was passed in 2007 in response to criticisms after various outbreaks and consumer deaths from food and drug contamination occured under the FDA’s watch. The FDA hopes that this new system will help lower the risks of illness caused by defective food and drug products.
