Fatal Texas A&M Bonfire Collapse Remembered

Texas A&M University is planning an event to commemorate an incident that resulted in a flurry of lawsuits, namely, the bonfire collapse of 1999.

Students and administrators in the College Station Texas area are expected to attend a candlelight vigil at the site where 12 people were killed and 27 people injured.  The infamous incident occurred when a 59-foot-tower of logs crashed down on celebrating students on Nov 18, 1999.   Up to 70,000 people gathered on campus annually for the event to watch the lighting of the bonfire on the eve of the November football game against the University of Texas, the school’s arch rival.

Roughly 10,000 people are expected to attend the official ceremony at 2:42 a.m. Wednesday morning, the exact time of the accident and will be held at the A&M’s basketball arena. The actual candlelight vigil will be held at the site of the bonfire accident, where a circular memorial rests.

The vigil will occur on the accident’s 10th anniversary.
