Evangelist Gets 175 in Prison for Sex Crimes
Evangelist Tony Alamo was sentenced to 175 years in prison on Friday for sex crimes. He was convicted of taking underage girls across state lines for sex, and is effectively serving a life sentence for molesting children he took as “brides” in his ministry. Several of Alamo’s victims testified in a hearing on Friday, telling how their families were destroyed while the evangelist took over their lives.
Alamo, age seventy, was convicted in federal court on a ten-count indictment. The judge says he abused his status as a father figure and pastor, and also that he threatened the girls with “the loss of their salvation.”
