DNA Database Gaps lead to Tragedy

Wisconsin authorities say that a man accused of twenty-year series of killings in Milwaukee left his DNA everywhere except for the one place it could have helped save a life. Walter Ellis should have given a sample of his DNA while serving a prison term earlier this decade, authorities say. Analysts were unable to match a DNA sample found on a victim in 2003, which later turned out to be Ellis’.

This case is just one example of the thousands of samples missing from the national DNA archive because they were either lost or never taken. Investigators say the missing DNA evidence could have helped them solve dozens of cases.
