Court Examines Ohio’s Injection Procedures

The failed execution of the Ohio inmate has caused a tremendous stir in the nation’s justice and corrections system – his execution was halted after technicians spent two hours trying to find a usable vein. This unprecedented failure has spurred a court in Ohio to examine the injection procedures used, and Governer Ted Strickland has ordered five-month reprieves to all executions in order to give the prison department more time to update protocols for dealing with delays in finding suitable veins.

Ohio has put thirty-two people to death since 1999 when executions were resumed. Texas immediately put two people to death after the failed execution, and the state of Virginia is preparing to execute John Allen Muhammed, the sniper convicted in the Washington-area killing, next month. Muhammed’s attorney said that he will not be raising objections based on the incident in Ohio.
