Court Considers Affirmitive Action Ban in Michigan
A federal court of appeals is considering a lawsuit that challenges Michigan’s ban against racial preferences in admissions to public universities and government hiring. Civil rights proponents and students of the University of Michigan, as well as faculty and applicants, say the measure approved in 2006 is unconstitutional. Critics of the amendment say that it has created an unfair process by which universities give credit to geographical diversity and legacy status, but not racial identity.
Supporters of the measure say that it reflects the will of the people. A challenge to the law last year was dismissed by a judge.
