Connecticut Raid Retaliation for ID Cards

Ten residents of Connecticut have filed a lawsuit that accuses federal authorities of having violated their rights by conducting an immigration raid in response to a New Haven program. The program provides identification cards to foreigners that are illegally staying in the United States. The June 6, 2007 raid came two days after the city approved the issuance of identification to all city residents, regardless of immigration status.

Officials from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement deny that the early-morning raids were retaliatory, saying that planning for the raids had begun the year before. The lawsuit, which was filed on Wednesday in United States District Court, cites several e-mails between federal authorities containing what the residents allege are hostile tones towards the ID card program.
