Forty-seven-year-old Theodore Caron of Barre was arrested in February in the strangulation death of Pamela Brown. A DNA sampled linked Caron to the slaying. Caron initially pleaded innocent to first-degree murder. On Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder. That’s punishable by a 15-to-35-year sentence, but Caron’s attorney said he is likely to become eligible for release in less than seven years, based on 1982 sentencing rules.

The state Parole Board would determine whether to release Caron once he become eligible. Brown was found behind a school the day after people crowded downtown to attend a festival. She had been strangled with a cord from her blouse.

Gollon Bait & Fish Farm was sentenced Wednesday to three years probation, fined $6,000 and ordered to pay the cost of additional monitoring of the health of bait fish by U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb. The business pleaded guilty to the charge on Oct. 29.

Federal prosecutors said Gollon received nearly $1.5 million in bait fish from companies in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Arkansas without acquiring the necessary permits or certificates showing they were disease-free. Two other Wisconsin bait companies that pleaded guilty were to be sentenced on Thursday and another was to be sentenced Jan. 8.

Timothy Smith, Anthony Howe and Amber Talbot pleaded guilty earlier this year conspiracy and second-degree murder in the death of 25-year-old Christopher Gray of Groton, Vt. Prosecutors say Gray was killed for taking a romantic interest in Talbot. She was the girlfriend of defendant Michael Robie.

Gray was stabbed more than 30 times in October 2008. On Monday, Smith and Howe were sentenced to 40 years to life in prison and Talbot was sentenced to 25 to 50 years. Robie was in jail on other charges when Gray was killed. He has admitted orchestrating the attack from his jail cell. He will be sentenced at a later date.

Marshall also is expected to continue his appeals and might be able to stay free on bail indefinitely. He tried, but failed, to get the judge to throw out the part of his October conviction that requires prison time. Defense lawyers have said the former ambassador’s illnesses could make any prison term a death sentence.

Marshall was convicted of exploiting Astor’s mental frailty to steal from her nearly $200 million fortune. She died at 105 in 2007.

Forty-year-old James Larrison of Avondale, Ariz., entered the plea on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Wilmington. No sentencing date has been set.

According to court documents, Larrison tried to export from the U.S. to Iran two camera control boxes and switches.

He has been sentenced to eighteen years in prison. Twenty-eight-year-old Kari Jo Atkinson was sentenced Thursday in 7th District Court and must spend at least two years in prison before becoming eligible for parole.

The Post Register reports that the former Sandcreek Middle School teacher asked for probation so she could continue counseling and remain with her family and two daughters, ages 4 and 6.

The two were convicted following a six-week trial. Prosecutors say they conspired with others to obtain millions of dollars of mortgage loans for unqualified borrowers from 2002 to 2005. They were convicted on charges including wire fraud and money laundering.

Under federal sentencing guidelines, each faces between five and eight years in prison, although the government is expected to argue for longer sentences.

Banita Jacks was discovered in her home with her four daughters’ decomposing corpses – she refused to use an insanity defense. The defense has asked Judge Frederick H. Weisberg to appoint an independent counsel to investigate. Prosecutors say there’s no need. They’ll be in court Friday.

A jury convicted Edward Ates of shooting and killing Paul Duncsak in the latter’s New Jersey home. Ates’ defense was focused on the idea that he was not in sufficient physical shape to run up and down the stairs to shoot Duncsak, and then escape by driving over twenty hours to his mother’s home in Louisiana.

Ates was sixty-two years old and weighed two hundred eighty pounds when Duncsak was killed.

The court unanimously acknowledged in a ruling on Tuesday that character evidence for murder victims is typically barred. Relatives of the victim, Ralph Lape Jr., testified on his generous nature and good character during sentencing, but no counter-evidence was permitted.

The Supreme Court says jurors may then have been less inclined to sentence Gill to death for the July 2002 kidnapping, robbery and shooting.
