California Man Sentenced for Pointing Laser at Plane
A California man was recently sentenced to two-and-a-half years in federal prison for aiming a laser beam at planes as they tried to land. Dana Christian Welch, thirty-seven, was the first person in the nation to be convicted at a trial for disrupting planes using a laser. Welch reportedly aimed a handheld laser at two Boeing jets as the passenger planes were about to land at John Wayne Airport on May 21, 2008.
The laser beam struck one pilot in the eye causing flash blindness, and interrupted the pilots’ ability to land the other plane.
