Body of Missing Girl Found, Two Face Charges

The body of five-year-old Shaniya Davis of North Carolina was discovered on Monday, near a rural road, almost a week after she was reported missing. Shaniya’s mother, twenty-five-year-old Antoinette Davis, was arrested and charged with human trafficking and felony child abuse, because authorities allege she was trying to sell her daughter for prostitution. Her sister, Brenda Davis, age twenty, said she could not believe the charges.

“I don’t believe she could hurt her children,” said Brenda Davis, who spoke with her sister at the jail Sunday. Davis’ aunt, Yvonne Mitchell, said the mother had two jobs and would never harm the child. Police have also arrested a man seen on a hotel surveillance camera seen carrying Shaniya the night of her disappearance.
