Arizona Lawmakers Slam Cities on Budget Lawsuit
Jan Brewer, the governor of Arizona, as well as top Republican legislators lambasted several Arizona municipalities for challenging the constitutionality of some parts of budget law. The municipalities’ criticisms were targeted at provisions that deny government services and benefits to illegal immigrants.
Senator Russell Pearce, a Republican, said that the lawsuit amounts to “siding with lawbreakers over lawkeepers.” The governor said the lawsuit was “outrageous and shocking” that the budget law would be challenged “at a time when Arizona is suffering from budget deficits of unprecedented proportions and the state is struggling to meet the basic needs of its citizens.”
