Anti-Gay, Religiously Motivated Crimes on Rise

The FBI has released data showing a dramatic increase in the amount of hate crimes based on anti-gay, religious bias. The number of hate crimes reported increased by about two percent from last year, and the same statistics show an increase of almost eleven percent in hate crimes based on sexual orientation. The number of hate crimes based on religion rose by almost nine percent. The largest category, hate crimes motivated by races, fell by a little under one percent.

These increases may be due partly to a greater number of law enforcement agencies reporting hate crime data to the FBI. Last year, there were 7,783 hate crimes reported to the FBI, with seven murders being categorized as hate crimes.
