A task force of state, regional and federal officials is investigating a string of suspicious weekend fires in Massachusetts, including one in which two people died. At least nine fires were reported early Sunday in houses and cars within a half-mile radius in the college town of Northampton, Mass. Authorities say they suspect arson. Manhattan DA Uses Sting to Stop Blackmailing of Letterman

An employee of CBS News was recently indicted on charges of blackmail in a plot against David Letterman. Manhattan’s District Attorney, Robert Morgenthau, reported the indictment against Robert Halderman on Friday, telling authorities that he had used an undercover sting operation to reveal the plot. Letterman reported that he had discovered a package filled with embarrassing photographs and e-mails in his limosine. Lawyer Charged in Fraud Gave $6M to Non-Profits

A defunct South Florida law firm run by an attorney now charged with operating a huge Ponzi scheme gave more than $6 million in the past year to charities and nonprofit groups. A federal bankruptcy court filing details contributions by the firm Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler to more than 100 organizations. Former firm CEO Scott Rothstein has pleaded not guilty to racketeering and other charges stemming from what prosecutors say was a $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme involving legal settlement investments. Teens to be Arraigned in Hate Crime Case

Two Pennsylvania teenagers are scheduled to appear in federal court for the first time since being charged with a hate crime in the death of an illegal Mexican immigrant. Eighteen-year-old Brandon Piekarsky and 19-year-old Derrick Donchak will be arraigned Tuesday in Wilkes-Barre on charges stemming from the July 2008 beating death of 25-year-old Luis Ramirez.
